London, 1908. Private Detective Francis Reginald Wright has been hired by Madame Elizabeth Madely to find her missing husband...

Outside the gates of Madely's Factory, Francis Reginald Wright P.I. stands surveying the area, Smoking his cigarette and checking his revolver over one last time.

(Narration)

"I don't like going near these places, there is something
strange and eerie about them, Everything looks normal but
I get the feeling that underneath, something sinister is happening..."

Wright moves off through the gates towards the entrance to the factory. Holstering his revolver and stepping out his cigarette as he goes.

(Narration)

"...When the visitors came they converted all these places to
produce the gaseous atmosphere for their Habitats.
Madely was one of the first to convert...
...Why would anyone want him dead, and would the Visitors
allow him to come to harm?"

Wright, posing as a government inspector, is shown around the factory and introduced to the workers. He asks them about Madely and the visitors.

(Narration)

"Most of these people have never even seen the enigmatic
Madely let alone know of his whereabouts! They are all just
machines, blissfully happy to carry out their work without question...
...Is it just me? Am I the only one who is not affected by this
disease of the mind?"

Wright is walking down a dimly lit corridor when he is accosted by a man dressed as one of the workers. The man pulls him into a shadowy side room.

Worker

"'Ere? Who the one been asking question about old Madely
ain't ya? Didn't want to say nothing earlier, They have eyes and ears
everywhere know what I mean? Thing is I like to think
I 'Ave as well, keep an eye out for things I do."

Wright

"What sort of things?"

Worker

"Strange and terrible things. I sneaked a goosy at one of them
once, horrible things. Gave me the willies.

Wright

"Get to the point, Sir. What are you trying to tell me?"

The Worker grabs Wright and pins him to the wall.

Worker

"Old Madely, I recon he went the way of all
the other's that go near them ."

Wright

"And that is what?"

Worker

"They go loony, end up in the asylum. Horrible places...
Horrible... You want to try looking there for
the old man, you mark my words."

The Worker lets go of Wright and he stumbles forward. Quickly he walks back down the corridor away from the man.

Francis Reginald Wright P.I. leaves the sinister and deceptive confines of Madely's factory no nearer the truth than when he started, at least now though he knew there were others like him.
